MG Cyberster - MG's Brand New Electric Sports Convertible
MG have been making waves in the market for some time now, with their impressive line of budget family cars that come with a load of spec as standard. Whether it be a family SUV or fully-electric hatchback, they have it all. The wide range of ICE, PHEV and EV engines has seen them grow in popularity for the business lease market too, with drivers looking to lower the amount they pay in Benefit in Kind (company car tax).
The announcement of the MG Cyberster as one of the first, if not the first, reasonably priced electric convertible will no doubt prove incredibly popular.
Whilst initial details from MG are still scant at this stage, it is estimated that the Cyberster will cost between £50-60k depending on the powertrain and battery option. Now, this may not sound like a reasonably priced car, but considering the cost of other convertible sports car that are not electric currently on the market, there is scope to argue that this will be viable option.
Despite the UK often lacking in the sort of weather that makes a convertible worth owning, the MG Cyberster's roof can open or close in a mere 10 seconds. It can be operated up to a speed of 32mph, giving you peace of mind for when the inevitable August rain starts to pour.
KEY STATS
Powertrain: 77kWh battery with 1 e-motor
0-62mph: 4.6 seconds
Power: 335 brake horse power
Top Speed: Not Confirmed
Range: 320-330 miles
Performance wise, the Cyberster has definitely earned the title of Sports Car. With its nippy 0-62 speed, it beats the likes of the Porsche 718 Boxster and even some high performance sports cars. Of course, with the top speed yet to be confirmed, it is unknown whether you will be picking up 1st place in any drag races just yet. Range anxiety continues to be something that plagues the EV market, with arguments still prevalent against the current EV infrastructure in the UK not supporting low-ranged EVs. The Cyberster has a range up to approximately 320 miles, although real world figures are likely to be slightly lower. Even for the biggest of critics, this is a sufficient range that one would expect from an EV.
